Until her dying breath, President George H.W. Bush held his wife’s Barbara’s hand, a family spokesperson said.
“He held her hand all day today and was at her side when [she] left this good earth,” the former president’s chief of staff Jean Becker said.
The former first couple had been together for 73 years — since meeting as teenagers on the eve of World War II — and the ex-president is now leaning on the support he’s receiving from loved ones, in the wake of Barbara’s death Tuesday at the age of 92.
“Obviously, this is a very challenging time. But it will not surprise all of you who know and love him that he also is being stoic and strong and is being lifted up by his large and supportive family,” Becker said.
George H.W. and Barbara Bush were the longest-married couple in presidential history. They far outdistanced the 54-year union of John and Abigail Adams — who like George and Barbara Bush, had a son serve as president.
